The Alchemists

The Alchemists are a powerful faction among the Rivarans. They are geniuses whose advances in the field of chemistry have both benefited their society, and spread corruption through it as well. They like to fancy themselves the true inheritors to the long forgotten art of magic, but in truth they are no more magical than anyone else. On the outward appearance, they are a guild of craftsmen who provide myriad services to the displaced people of Rivara, as well as their military with their inventions of explosives and the development of gunpowder.

However, beneath the philanthropic facade lies the largest and most dangerous crime syndicates the world has ever known. Back-alley sales of firearms to customers who wish to remain discreet, massive manufacturing and distribution of chemical drugs, and assassination through the use of various undetectable poisons developed by them are only a few of the services the Alchemists provide to those who are looking for them. They have even spread their influence through the politics of Rivara by the use of blackmail, bribery and special potions designed to make their drinker more compliant. There are even rumors spread through dark corners about the creation of homunculi (singular homunculus), beings composed of slabs of clay thrown in great bubbling vats filled with chemical soups that are made of many unsavory ingredients, one of which is a pint of the user's own blood, that imbibe the crudely sculpted clay with a kind of false life, who are used as assassins, mercenaries, bruisers or anything else the Alchemists need them for. Every once in a while, a rumor will rise up about them, but those who spread those rumors are generally never seen again. Few Rivarans even believe those rumors anyway. It is much more comfortable to believe the charade they put up, and as such, most are comforted by the sight of the Alchemist colors of black, blood red and dark magenta, seeing them as the symbol of those who bring enlightenment and well being to society.
